葉祥明 絵・文 Format: JP Oversized 絵本 Editorial Review
The illustrated book titled "あのひのこと" (Remember March 11, 2011) offers readers a poignant reflection on the events surrounding the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Through rich illustrations and a narrative that combines both reality and abstraction, the book captures the raw impact of the disaster while simultaneously conveying a message of hope and resilience. Reviewers have expressed that the book presents the events of that tragic day with striking clarity, showing not only the physical devastation—towns washed away, families torn apart—but also the emotional aftermath. The image of a solitary boy standing amidst the wreckage poignantly encapsulates the profound sense of loss experienced by many. Yet, the narrative does not dwell solely on despair; it emphasizes the importance of remembrance as a stepping stone to moving forward and finding brightness in the future. The companionship of the boy with his rescued puppy "Umi" adds a layer of warmth and highlights the themes of survival and connection. The dual-language format featuring both English and Japanese increases accessibility, making it a meaningful read for a wider audience. The artistic style is lauded for its beauty, particularly the stunning depictions of the sea, which resonate with a sense of healing and hope. Overall, "あのひのこと" serves not just as a tribute to loss but also as a celebration of persistence and remembrance, allowing readers to reflect deeply on the past while inspiring a hopeful outlook toward the future. **
