Productdetails
- Devon: A Poem is a literary work written by John Gompertz and published in 1825. The book is a long-form poem that celebrates the natural beauty and cultural richness of the English county of Devon. The poem is divided into four parts, each of which explores different aspects of Devon's landscape and history. The first part of the poem focuses on Devon's rugged coastline, with its towering cliffs and crashing waves. Gompertz describes the sea as both a source of danger and a thing of beauty, praising the bravery of the fishermen who brave its waters. The second part of the poem turns to Devon's rolling hills and verdant valleys, where the poet celebrates the region's pastoral beauty and the hardworking farmers who tend the land. The third part of the poem delves into Devon's rich history, with Gompertz recounting tales of ancient battles and legendary figures who have left their mark on the county. The final part of the poem brings all of these themes together, as Gompertz celebrates the enduring spirit of Devon and its people. Throughout the book, the poet's love for Devon shines through, making this a heartfelt tribute to one of England's most beloved regions. Overall, Devon: A Poem is a beautiful and evocative work of literature that captures the essence of this unique and captivating corner of England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
