Your Lie in April is a dramatic slice of life tale with music as the main theme. The story follows Kosei Arima, who was once an admired child prodigy pianist but lost the ability to play after his mother died during a performance. He then meets violin virtuoso Kaori, who wants him to take up the piano again. The art shows the music really well, and the characters are sweet and adorable with many layers. The manga handles expressing sound in a visual medium well, with the impact created by the music, being seen. The real focus, however, is on people's experiences of the music. Kosei's relationship with music is a complicated one, tied up with his feelings toward his abusive mother. Your Lie in April is a beautiful manga, unlike anything I've ever read before.
