A Kestrel for a Knave is a coming-of-age story set in an unnamed, bleak northern mining town in England in the 1960s. The main character, Billy Casper, lives with his mother and older brother and is often left to fend for himself. Bullied by both teachers and students at school, Billy steals a kestrel chick, which he then raises and pours all his love and passion into. The story highlights the harshness of Billy's life in a town that has lost its industry and depicts his lack of any real aspirations in life, where his only escape is his kestrel. The book is a mix of hopelessness, broken dreams, humour, and Northern banter, and is a very touching novel.
