John Pizzarelli Format: Audio CD Jazz 35227878 Editorial Review
**** "Midnight McCartney" showcases the impressive talents of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli as he explores the underappreciated solo works of Paul McCartney. Commissioned by McCartney himself, this album serves as a tribute that breathes new life into beloved classics from the former Beatle's extensive catalog. Pizzarelli combines his exquisite jazz style with engaging arrangements, including rhythmic bossa nova twists and smooth vocal harmonies, often featuring his wife, Jessica Molaskey, whose input contributed significantly to the album's production. Critics and fans alike celebrate the album for its innovative interpretations. Pizzarelli's skillful arrangements highlight the inherent melodic beauty of McCartney's songs, as evidenced in tracks like "Heart of the Country," which gains new energy through its swinging treatment. The artist’s adaptation of "Let 'Em In" stands out with its punchy piano riffs and vibrant brass elements, transforming the well-known tune into a lively jazz number while maintaining its catchy essence. Additionally, the inclusion of "Wonderful Christmastime" as a closing piece serves to encapsulate the album's jubilant spirit. While some listeners may feel that not all song choices align with their personal favorites, the overwhelming Consensus is that Pizzarelli's musicianship reignites passion for McCartney’s work, proving the universal appeal of these songs when filtered through jazz. With its quality production and heartwarming renditions, "Midnight McCartney" clearly resonates with both Beatles fans and jazz enthusiasts, earning high praise and standing as a potential springboard for future tributes to other artists. **
