The transducer is able to read through the hull or mount outside the boat on the transom in contact with the water. Users have reported that the device can read well up to 100 to 125 feet in depth but may get spotty beyond that and loses signal at higher speeds. The shallow water alarm is easy to use and hear, and the cord is long enough to mount the gauge in the bow or rear of the boat.
